**Art Institute of Chicago Explores Origins of Ancient Mythical Creatures**
The Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois sheds light on the possible origins behind ancient depictions of griffins, mythical creatures with the body of a lion and the head of a bird. Scholars suggest that the inspiration for these fierce embellishments might have been the fossilized remains of four-legged, bird-beaked dinosaurs discovered in Central Asia.
Travelers and traders crossing the Gobi Desert could have come across such fossils and, lacking paleontological knowledge, developed mythical explanations for the strange remains. The griffin became a symbol of protection and power, often used in decorative and ceremonial contexts.
A prominent example from ancient Greece highlights this cultural connection. In the museum's collection, a pair of griffin protomes, dating back to 625–575 BC, is presented as part of a ceremonial vessel likely displayed in a sanctuary. The vessel, used by a wealthy Greek patron, served as a mark of religious devotion and economic status.
These historical artifacts, crafted in ancient Greece, are currently on display in Gallery 151 of the Art Institute of Chicago. Visitors can view the detailed craftsmanship up close and learn about the fascinating intersection of ancient art, mythology, and paleontology.
