Cool Spring Weather Boosts Cornell Crop Plantings

Cornell University in Ithaca reports that spring planting is underway, with recommendations from faculty expert Marvin Pritts of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Pritts, who has expertise in berry crops and sustainable production practices, noted that some plants may be suited for ground planting this month.

Pritts explained that unlike recent springs, this season has been consistently cool with only a few warm days. The mild conditions are ideal for perennial plants that overwinter above ground. The winter was not severe, preventing damage to flower buds, and temperatures have remained stable enough to avoid premature flowering followed by frost damage.

If the cool weather continues through April, ornamental trees and shrubs are expected to perform well, and fruit crops should be abundant this year.
