Macaulay Library Chronicles Nearly Century of Animal Sounds

The Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a long history that dates back to 1929. Its collection began when Arthur "Doc" Allen, one of the nation's first ornithology professors and founder of the Lab, recorded the song of three birds. These recordings were made in Ithaca’s Stewart Park early one May morning. The birds chosen for the recording were a song sparrow, a house wren, and a rose-breasted grosbeak.

Although the primary focus of the library is on birds, it also holds media of other animals including lions, frogs, whales, monkeys, seals, and elephants. For more information, visit the Cornell University alumni website.
